HAVE YOU KEPT THE CARTRIDGE FILTER CENTRE SLEEVE?

CAN AFFECT

Cartridge-style oil filter elements commonly fitted to a number of Toyota and Lexus vehicles where the OEM centre sleeve is incorporated into the oil filter cap, but can dislodge during routine service, and accidentally be thrown away.

imge description

AFFECTED APPLICATIONS:

LEXUS RX, IS, GS; TOYOTA Aurion, Camry, Kluger, RAV4

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:

  • Missing the OEM perforated centre sleeve when installing a new filter cartridge – The centre Sleeve is also known as oil filter support tube, core, or spigot

  • The sleeve attaches/locates in a groove at the bottom of the oil filter cap (Refer Image: No.01)

  • The sleeve can be dislodged during removal of the existing filter – with it remaining captive in the old cartridge filter, and easily thrown away. (Refer Image: No.02)

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
Image No. 01

OUTCOME:

  • Failure to re-install the OEM perforated centre sleeve commonly results in twisting of the new cartridge element, potentially crushing the filter during operation. (Refer Images: No.03 & No.04)

  • Distorting the filter adversely effects the flow properties of the filter.

  • If the filter is to collapse, engine oil could flow unfiltered into the engine. (Refer Image: No.05)

  • Allowing unfiltered oil to circulate through an engine can cause significant engine damage and /or possible failure.

OUTCOME:
Image No. 02

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE:

  • Workshops have been known to accidentally discard the perforated sleeve when discarding the old filter

  • Be aware that cartridge filters often utilize a centre sleeve, a component of the oil cap housing.

  • Always check the old filter before discarding, and ensure the centre sleeve has not dislodged and become stuck in the old filter

  • When replacing either R2620P, R2648P, R2651P or R2664P, ensure the perforated core/ sleeve remains correctly located inside the filter cap. (Refer Images: No.06, 07 & 08)

  • Perforated centre sleeves are not available as a separate part. A complete, new replacement filter housing must be purchased from the OEM

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE:
