The Toyota LandCruiser Prado is a family favourite across the country, offering comfort and practicality for everyday use and unparalleled offroad capability when it comes time for that family getaway. However, to keep your Prado reliable for family duties, regular maintenance is a must.
To find out your Prado’s next service date, check the vehicle’s service manual and familiarise yourself with its service intervals. As always, we recommend taking your LandCruiser Prado to your local mechanic for servicing.
In this Service My Car Article, we look at replacing the LandCruiser Prado’s engine oil and oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, and cabin air filter. To find out what part numbers you need, visit the Ryco Filters website and grab the details before heading down to your local parts store.
This LandCruiser Prado uses a Ryco RSK40C Service Kit which includes a Z418 Oil Filter, an A1915 Air Filter, a Z884 Fuel Filter, and an RCA164P Cabin Air Filter. For the best quality service products, be sure to ask for Ryco.
To begin, raise the vehicle and place your drain pan underneath. Then, remove the cover on the undertray to gain access to the sump plug.
From there, undo the sump plug and drain the oil. Do this while the engine is still warm to help the oil drain faster.
While the oil drains, remove the old oil filter and clean out the oil filter’s mounting location.
Then, apply a layer of fresh oil to the Ryco Oil Filter’s rubber gasket and fit the new oil filter.
Once the oil has drained, refit the sump plug with a new washer and reinstall the cover.
From there, do the initial oil fill using a Ryco Flexi Funnel to avoid any mess. The 2.8L Turbo-Diesel engine takes about 7.5 litres of oil.
Once complete, start the engine and check for any leaks.
For the air filter replacement, start by undoing the airbox clips then lift the lid away from the airbox. Then, remove the old air filter and clean out the airbox to remove any debris.
The new Ryco Air Filter can then be fitted, making sure that the seal is seated correctly within the airbox.
From here, we can move on to replacing the fuel filter. Start by removing the fuel hoses and electrical connectors from the fuel filter primer pump.
Be sure to catch any spilt fuel with a container and take note of which hose goes to which port. Then, lift the fuel filter assembly away from the engine bay.
With the fuel filter assembly placed in a container, remove this locking ring.
The OE fuel filter water sensor can then be removed like so and the old fuel filter can be unscrewed from the primer pump.
Next, clean the fuel filter mating surface on the primer pump and apply a small amount of diesel to the new Ryco Fuel Filter’s rubber gasket.
The new fuel filter can then be refitted to the primer pump and the OE fuel filter water sensor and locking ring can be reinstalled.
From here, the fuel filter assembly can be refitted in the engine bay and the fuel hoses and electrical connectors can be reattached.
To complete the fuel filter replacement, prime the fuel system by pressing down on the primer pump until it becomes firm.
To replace the cabin air filter, start by removing the glovebox like so to reveal the filter housing.
Then, remove the filter housing cover and take out the old cabin air filter.
Clear the area of debris then insert the new Ryco Cabin Air Filter with it facing in the correct airflow direction as indicated on the filter.
From there, the filter housing cover and glovebox can be refitted in reverse order.
Once the service is complete, the vehicle can be road-tested to ensure that everything is in good working order.
Be sure to fit a Ryco Service Sticker to note when the vehicle is due for its next service.
