The MK8 Volkswagen Golf R has continued to hold its place as the king of the hot hatches, due in no small part to its competitive power output, excellent handling, and cutting-edge AWD system. However, to make sure your Golf R continues to perform, it’s important to service the oils and filters on time and with good quality products.
In this Service My Car Article, we’ll be looking at changing the engine oil and oil filter, air filter, and cabin air filter on the MK8 Volkswagen Golf R. As always, be sure to familiarise yourself with your vehicle’s service intervals so that you know each time you’re due for a service. When service time comes around, check out the Ryco Filters website to confirm the part numbers you need before heading down to your local parts store.
For the Golf R models from 2022 to present, we recommend using a Ryco R2748P Oil Filter, an A1858 Air Filter, and a RCA270MS MicroShield Cabin Air Filter. When it comes to the best quality service products you can afford from your retailer, Ryco has you covered.
When it comes to the oil and filter change, it’s a good idea to start with the engine warm, but not so warm that you can’t work on it, to help the oil to drain faster. To begin the oil change, start by accessing the oil filter from the top of the engine bay. Then, loosen the filter housing with a 32mm socket and allow the oil inside to flow back into the engine.
From there, remove the filter with a rag underneath to catch any oil that may drip out and use a small pick to remove the internal cartridge filter and O-ring from the oil filter housing.
Before fitting the new oil filter, coat the new supplied O-ring with a small film of oil and install it into the filter housing. If there’s any extra oil is present within the filter housing, be sure to drain it out now.
With filter housing clear, fit the Ryco oil filter into the housing until it clicks into place and reinstall the assembly back onto the engine. Be sure to only tighten the oil filter about a quarter turn past hand-tight.
Next, get the car in the air and undo the sump plug to drain the oil. Once the oil has drained, clean off the surface and refit the sump plug with a new washer.
With the sump plug refitted, you can then do your initial oil fill using the Ryco Flexi Funnel to help avoid any mess. These engines take about 5.7 litres of oil. Once you’ve reached that, you can start the car up and check for any leaks.
To reset the service reminder, turn the ignition to the on position by pressing the ‘Start’ Button without having your foot on the brake. Using the controls on the right side of the steering wheel, press the right arrow button, and scroll until you can select the Travel time/distance menu. Once you’re in that menu, scroll to ‘Long term’ and hold the right arrow for 10 seconds. Then, release the button, scroll to ‘Reset oil change service’ and click ‘Ok’. The centre of the cluster will then ask if you want to reset the oil change service. Click ‘Ok’ again and the service reminder will be reset.
Moving onto the air filter, simply unscrew the airbox lid, lift the lid away, and pull out the old filter. From there, clean out the air box using a damp towel, and install the new Ryco Air Filter. Make sure that the seal is fitted correctly within the airbox and re-install the lid.
To replace the cabin filter, you will need to remove the glovebox compartment by pressing in the two buttons at the top of the glovebox simultaneously.
The cabin filter sits directly behind this compartment. From there, pull down the three tabs along the top of the filter cover. This will allow you to fold down the filter cover and pull it up and out of the way.
Next, slide out the old cabin air filter and clean the area of any debris. Be sure to take note of which way the arrow facing down on the back of the cabin filter is pointing.
Next, fit the new Ryco N99 MicroShield Cabin Air Filter, making sure the arrow on the back is facing down in the correct orientation.
From there, you can reinstall the filter glovebox components. The MicroShield is made of N99 medical grade media and can stop these minuscule pollutants from making their way inside the car by filtering out particles down to .3 microns and can stop viral and bacterial contaminants as well, plus dust and pollen.
Now all that’s left is to go for a road test and make sure everything’s in good working order. As always, we recommend using a local mechanic to service your Volkswagen Golf.
