The RX8 is Mazda’s final swansong for the Hiroshima-native manufacturer’s beloved rotary engine, making it an undeniable modern classic. However, rotary engines require special attention and part of that is staying on top of regular servicing.
Be sure to familiarise yourself with the RX8’s service intervals and check the owner’s manual for its next service date. As always, we recommend taking your Mazda RX8 to your local mechanic for servicing.
When it’s time for your next service, make sure you’ve got everything you need before diving into the job. In this Service My Car Article, we look at replacing the RX8’s engine oil and oil filter, air filter, and cabin air filter. To find out what part numbers you need, visit the Ryco Filters website and grab the details before heading down to your local parts store.
This Mazda RX8 uses a Ryco Z436ST Oil Filter, an A1574 Air Filter, and an RCA193M MicroShield Cabin Air Filter. When it comes to the best quality service products, Ryco has you covered.
To begin, remove the engine cover then raise the vehicle and place your drain pan underneath. Then, undo the sump plug and drain the oil. We recommend doing this with the engine still warm to help the oil drain faster.
While the oil drains, remove the old oil filter. From there, clean the oil filter mating surface and apply a layer of new oil to the Ryco Syntec Oil Filter’s rubber gasket. Then, fit the new filter and refit the sump plug with a new washer.
Ryco SynTec Oil Filters are perfect for performance applications - capable of filtering out 99.8% of contaminants down to 20 micron whilst providing low restriction and high efficiency.
From there, do the initial oil fill using a Ryco Flexi Funnel to prevent any mess. The 13B Petrol engine takes about 4.4 litres of oil. Once complete, start it up and check for leaks.
To replace the air filter, start by unplugging the MAF sensor. Then, lift the airbox out of its mounting position. From here, you can unclip the airbox and remove the old air filter.
Next, clean out the airbox and install the new Ryco Air Filter. The airbox and MAF sensor plug can then be refitted in reverse order. Once complete, the engine cover can be refitted.
For the cabin air filters, start by removing the glovebox. Then, unclip the filter housing lid and take out the old cabin air filters.
Clear the area of any debris then insert the new Ryco N99 MicroShield Cabin Air Filters, making sure that they’re facing in the correct airflow direction as indicated on each filter.
From there, the filter housing lid and glovebox can be reinstalled. The MicroShield is made of N99 medical grade media and can stop viral and bacterial contaminants as well as other minuscule pollutants from making their way inside the vehicle by filtering out particles down to .3 micron.
Once the service is complete, take the vehicle for a road test and make sure everything’s in good working order. To cap off the job, fit a Ryco Service Sticker to note when the vehicle is due for its next service.
