In this article, we run through a service on one of motoring’s quintessential luxury SUVs, the BMW X5. First off, be sure to check the vehicle’s service manual to familiarise yourself with its service intervals and find out its next service date. As always, we recommend taking your BMW X5 to your local mechanic for servicing.

Before you jump into the job at hand, make sure you’ve got everything you need. In this article, we cover replacing the engine oil and oil filter, air filter, and cabin air filter. To find out what part numbers you need, visit the Ryco Filters website and grab the details before heading down to your local parts store.

The 2017 BMW X5 sDrive25d uses a Ryco R2828P Oil Filter, an A1886 Air Filter, and an RCA305M MicroShield Cabin Air Filter. Ryco has you covered with the best quality service products come service time.

To begin, raise the vehicle and place your drain pan underneath.

Then, undo the sump plug through the access hole in the splash tray and drain the oil. We recommend doing this while the engine is still warm to help the oil drain faster.

While the oil drains, remove the engine cover to access the oil filter and remove the oil filter cap. Then, remove the old oil filter cartridge from the cap.

From there, insert the supplied sealing rod and the new Ryco Oil Filter cartridge, making sure that the rod is clipped onto the black plastic end of the cartridge.

The supplied o-ring can then be fitted to the cap and the assembly reinstalled to the filter housing.

Once the oil has finished draining, refit the sump plug with a new washer. Next, do the initial oil fill using a Ryco Flexi Funnel to prevent any mess. The 2.0L Twin Turbo Diesel engine takes about 5 litres of oil. Once filled, start the vehicle and check for any leaks.

From there, you can begin the air filter replacement by removing the old air filter.

Give the airbox a quick clean then fit the new Ryco Air Filter, making sure that the seal is seated correctly within the airbox.

Next, we can look at replacing the cabin air filters. These are located on the passenger side of the engine bay below the engine cowl trim. Start by undoing these four plastic nuts to remove the engine cowl trim.

Then, unplug the electrical connector located near the bonnet strut and undo all of the nuts securing this plastic cover. This cover has the cabin air filters mounted to it.

Remove the cover and unclip the old cabin air filters.

Then, clean the area and clip in the new Ryco N99 MicroShield Cabin Air Filters, making sure that they’re facing in the correct airflow direction as indicated on the side of the filter.

From there, all components can be reinstalled in reverse order. The MicroShield is made of N99 medical grade media and can stop viral and bacterial contaminants as well as other minuscule pollutants from making their way inside the vehicle by filtering out particles down to .3 micron.

To complete the service, road-test the vehicle to ensure that everything’s in good working order.
